Best Practice: “Collaborative Work, Participation, and Diversity through Music: Percussion Circle”

Practice aimed at collaborative work and participation through the creation of musical rhythms, emphasizing the importance and value of diversity, and seeking to break down social barriers to bring cultures closer together.

It is a circle of percussion instruments, where the participants, following the instructions of the facilitator, create different rhythms and music. It begins with simple rhythms that become more complicated as the participants relax until they create group music.

The aim of this experience was to create a space for collaborative work, participation, and bringing people and cultures closer together through the creation of music.

The objectives that this practice was intended to achieve are related to the creation of communication between people through the universal language of music, breaking barriers and creating a common link: rhythms.

Through this theme, the participants could communicate and express themselves without having to speak, leaving aside languages or backgrounds. Music, as a universal language, helps to create links and connections, and this was another of the objectives of this practice: to create connections between people of different origins and to create a space of interrelation.

The main actors that participated in this practice is the group of TCNs and locals. In addition, the presence of a workshop facilitator or instructor is essential, since the workshop is adequately developed through this actor.

The facilitator of the experience is included as another important actor who will be the one who coordinates the activity.

For the correct performance of this experience, it is necessary to have a minimum of 10 participants and a maximum of 20. This number is adequate for the participants to interact with each other creating different musical rhythms.

The duration of this experience is approximately 4 hours. During this time, participants are introduced to the workshop so that they know the methodology that the instructor will carry out. After this is the workshop itself. At the end, a space for debate and communication between the participants is opened so that they can express how they felt.

To carry out this practice it is necessary to have certain resources:

Humans: group of TCNs and locals participants in the activity. Percussion workshop instructor. Facilitator of the experience that coordinates and stimulates the participation and involvement of the participants.

Materials: percussion instruments and chairs for all participants.

Infrastructure: spacious and comfortable space to carry out the activity. In the case of Spain, this experience was held at the Mingle Point, a space dedicated to the development of various Mingling experiences. This large tent was the perfect space to carry out this activity.

The main strengths of this experience were the collaboration and participation of the group to achieve a common goal: music. Language was not important and it was through the rhythms that the group of participants communicated, thus eliminating any barrier or stereotype.

It is a very rewarding activity where the participants enjoy themselves and become a whole, a group of people who create, communicate and share.

The way to improve this best practice is by choosing the most appropriate place, both for space and acoustics. In addition there must be sufficient instruments for all participants.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it should have flexible development, that is, that participants can enter and leave the circle as they wish, since asking or demanding that they participate continuously in the workshop is not the best way to get them to enjoy and learn from the experience.

For the application of this practice it is necessary first to have an instructor / facilitator with experience in large groups and who is able to create a sense of teamwork among the participants.

It is also important that the space is comfortable and has good acoustics, as well as that there are enough instruments for all participants. It is advisable that the instruments be percussion since it is easier to begin this type of activity.
