Practice for the knowledge and explanation of the Sustainable Development Goals in a playful way. A space for collaboration, coexistence and the exchange of ideas about the SDGs while the participants played an escape game with riddles, enigmas and different tests.
Although it was not a typical escape game (escaping from a closed space), the methodology of the game was the same. Through riddles, the participants had to open different chests that would help them save the world from a terrible catastrophe.
Aim of the best practice:
The aim of this practice was to create a space for debate and to get to know on the Sustainable Development Goals in an original, collaborative and fun way: through an escape game. With this theme in the background, the participants were able to exchange ideas and opinions on the matter, as well as learn what SDGs are and how to contribute to the success.
Objectives of the best practice:
In addition to the previously explained aim of knowledge and joint reflection on the SDGs, the objectives of this experience went further and sought joint work between TCNs and locals through a common goal. Finding the solution to the enigmas in a collaborative way, contributing in turn to breaking down barriers and forgetting origins to work for a common goal, in this case, saving the planet.
The main actors that participated in this practice are a group of TCNs and locals. In addition, the participation of the people in charge of organizing the escape game and explaining the instructions and how to participate is necessary.
Likewise, in this practice the presence of a facilitator who coordinates the work of all the participants is also important.
For the correct implementation of this practice, it is necessary to have a minimum of 10 participants and a maximum of 15. This number is adequate for the participants to interact with each other and create contacts while playing.
The approximate duration of this experience is 4 hours. During this time, participants are given an introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals and an escape game presentation. After this, the development of the game and a space to answer questions, make comments, etc.
To carry out this practice it is necessary to have certain resources:
Humans: group of TCNs and locals, personal organizer of the escape game, in this case, workers of the Environmental Research Centre of the Government of Cantabria (CIMA). Facilitator of the experience that coordinates and stimulates the participation and involvement of the participants.
Materials: screen, projector and computer. Materials necessary to carry out the escape game (chests, riddles, puzzles). Informative material on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Infrastructure: spacious and comfortable space to carry out the activity. In the case of Spain, this experience was held at the Mingle Point, a space dedicated to the development of various Mingling experiences. This large tent was the perfect space to carry out this activity.
The main strengths of this practice were, especially, the collaborative work, the participation of the group, the elimination of barriers and the creation of contacts. In addition, the knowledge acquired through the game on the Sustainable Development Goals was remarkable.
The fact that this practice is based on collaborative and teamwork is one of the greatest strengths, since with this methodology a space is created in which participants can communicate with each other and work for a common goal.
Likewise, the delivery of documentation related to the theme of the activity helps participants to continue discussing the matter in other areas of their lives and with other people, creating an effect of dissemination and reflection.
For the application of these types of activities, it is advisable to choose a motivating, universal and interesting context or theme for everyone. The Sustainable Development Goals are a perfect choice since they highlight the importance of globalization and the feeling that we are all part of the same planet.
In addition, the infrastructure (adequate space) and informational materials must be taken into account.
