Best Practice: “Mingling in open pre-school”

The mingling was one of 17 mingling experience carried out in Sweden.

Aim of the best practice:

The aim of the best practice was to create a meeting place for Swedish and immigrants to meet and to have a nice time together, to foster social integration.

Objectives of the best practice:

The objectives were to create a party in cooperation with Uppsala municipality and their open pre-school in a family center in Gottsunda, a segregated area outside of Uppsala. The party was open for everyone so that Swedish families and immigrant families could mingel and meet each other. The idea was to order nice food and drinks and have some activities so the party become a natural meeting point and opportunity for people to get to know each other and have a nice time together. In this way, social integration is fostered, which is crucial for immigrants to feel at home in the new country and feel that they are part of their new society.

Actors were immigrant families, Swedish families, staff from Folkuniversitetet and municipality of Uppsala in the family center.

Min: 10

Max: 60

Depending on facilities and situation, the best practice can host different numbers of people. In our case, many people came but it can also be carried out with a smaller number of people. (Especially since we have a new situation with covid-19).

A good duration is between 2-4 hours.

Staff to organise a party is needed, somewhere to host the party and refreshments, coffee and ultimately food to make everyone happy.

The strenghts are many, since this occasion create an excellent meeting point and opportunity for Swedish and immigrants to get to know each other. Meeting points like this is crucial for the social integration of immigrants, enriching for Swedish people and furthermore the whole society. We experience a lot of tension today and a lot of prejudges against immigrants as everywhere in Europe. Furthermore, to foster social integration can have a lot of positive impacts, among others on labour market integration, since contacts in Sweden are crucial for getting internship or job.

Weakness of the best practice is that it takes a lot of resources to organise this kind of activity. However, it doesn’t need to be very fancy or special, the most important is to create an opportunity for people to meet in a relaxed atmosphere.

Be enough people to organise the best practice  depending on the number of participants.

Have people who can translate in the most common TCN languages if needed.
